ARM Student Design Contest on Smart Transportation Systems

The Advanced Computing and Communications Society (ACCS) announces the second edition of the ARM Student Design Contest on Smart Transportation Systems as part of its 21st Annual International Conference on Advanced Computing and Communications (ADCOM 2015) at Chennai, in September 2015.

ADCOM 2015 has a core theme in Technologies for Smart Cities, a theme to which Indian Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi has called attention. For the Design Contest, we chose the theme of Smart Transportation Systems, which fits in with the concept of Smart Cities.

Smart transportation systems are critical to addressing the traffic challenges posed by the increasing number of mega cities in our world, such as driver and pedestrian safety, traffic patterns and flows, and environmental friendliness and sustainability of urban and semi-urban landscapes with regard to noise, air and particulate matter pollution, to name a few. Smart transportation relies on consumer and commercial telematics to meet its multitude of requirements ranging from on-board driver-assist systems, emergency call systems and electronic toll-collection to advanced systems for safe driving via vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications. Smart Transportation Systems are complex and the technology still has a long way towards maturity.

The Design Contest is aimed at innovative solutions implementing Smart Transportation Subsystems using a combination of embedded system, wireless and sensor technologies. The focus should be on finding solutions that overcome the challenges in implementing the subsystems identified below:

  1. Cooperative Driving Systems using vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication to reduce the incidence of traffic jams and minimize CO2 emissions.
  2. Traffic Info Systems which gather and send real-time info on traffic patterns at various gateways, the in and out-flow trends and road conditions there over the net to a central server for use by drivers, transportation authorities, emergency-response personnel and GPS services like Map-my-India.
  3. Environmental Engineering Systems that Design disincentives for Unnecessary Honking.
  4. Safety Systems that Effect Lane Discipline with on-road Smart beacons or Design Disincentives for Overtaking from the Left on single-lane roads.
  5. Driver-Assist Systems for the disabled.
  6. Wireless-based system that uses RFID tags to locate, identify, monitor moving cars and provide drivers with the capability to signal an emergency with source info or receive data intended only for them.
  7. Anti-collision system for trucks and SUVs, and elimination of blind spots using embedded systems.

Many of the above subsystems have been implemented in various countries to varying degrees of success. However, weightage will be given to solutions that innovate with frugal engineering and are an immediate fit for solving problems in an Indian context.

Student teams whose proposals make it through the initial selection process will be invited to make a 10-min presentation at ADCOM 2015 of the What, Why and How of their proposed work. The proposals at a minimum should clearly outline the various scenarios involved in any one of the challenge areas above, the hardware required to implement the solution and the algorithm to be used for the best possible outcome.

After the ADCOM 2015 presentations, the top 25 proposals will move further to develop a Proof of Concept (PoC) with the help of a specially designed car kit powered by the ARM® Cortex®-M0+ processor based Freedom board (FRDM KL25Z). Truly revolutionary solutions will be considered for adoption by stake holders.

Important Dates:

  • Proposals sought by August 15, 2015
  • Acceptance communicated by August 30, 2015.
  • Presentation at ADCOM 2015 venue on September 18 2015.
  • Finals and Announcement of Winners in January 2016

Note:  Please email your proposals no later than August 15 2015, clearly marked “ARM Design Contest 2015” at the top center of the first page, to: adcom2015@accsindia.org along with the signed agreement.

The 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ based Freedom Board (FRDM KL25Z) from Freescale

The Freedom board sells at a student-affordable list price of 762 INR at element14 India.
Built around ARM’s most power-efficient processor, the ARM Cortex-M0+, it is the perfect piece of lab hardware for students interested in the up and coming areas of study and research, such as sensor motes for wireless-sensor networks (WSNs) and wearable computing. The board features an onboard tricolor (RGB) LED and an onboard 3-axis accelerometer. The on-board connectors compatible with off-the-shelf Arduino shields neatly augment the board’s capabilities. Even so, with just a breadboard, jumper wires and standalone components, the board indeed makes possible prototyping of systems simple and inexpensive. Last, but not least, the board’s mbed application programming interface (API) allows rapid prototyping of complex sensor systems with the same Freedom board.

Using the mbed API with the Freedom Board

The mbed API website (links below) for either board provides all the details, such as the board’s overview, pin-out diagram with pin functionality, pin names, onboard peripheral information, features/interfaces, firmware for using the mbed API and getting started with the board using the mbed API.

Signing up for a FREE online mbed Account

You have to sign up for an mbed account and then login to the mbed website to be able to start working with either Board. The online mbed compiler requires that the board be physically connected to your laptop or desktop with a USB cable. Essentially, the mbed API allows superfast prototyping of actual embedded systems in days instead of months or years. The mbed website is also truly a treasure trove of information replete with every project and experiment under the sun related to microprocessors.
